A sneak-peek at what's chic - 9 home renovation trends for 2023

What’s hot in home renovation for 2023? The sleek, modern, neutral trend of the 2020s continues, but with some bold additions to invigorate the space. Nature comes indoors. Health and wellness are influencing décor. Multifunctionality is a must. And there’s a touch of retro in the modern.

Trending colors

Budget level: low

You can change the personality of a room with nothing more than a fresh coat of paint. Right now, the go-to neutral color for a contemporary room is blush-beige - a warm, earthy tone that creates a sense of tranquility.

WGSN, a trend forecasting company, predicts that digital lavender will be the 2023 Color of the Year.Footnote1 This pale purple has a cool feel meant to evoke escapism.

Scandinavian touches

Budget level: low

Scandinavian home décor is similar to Swedish design (think IKEA) in its minimalism and smooth lines, but where Swedish design skews abstract and geometric, Scandinavian design opts for warmth and curves inspired by nature.

Adding a few Scandinavian vases, lamps, throw pillows, or even tea light holders is an inexpensive way to add a modern feel to a room that’s become stale.

Bring the outside inside

Budget level: low

With more people working from home, we're spending more time indoors than ever before. In the interest of health and well-being, home décor has moved toward an increasingly organic feel, adding potted plants, utilizing natural materials like reclaimed wood, and bathing various rooms in as much natural light as possible.

Bold wallpaper

Budget level: moderate

For many years, wallpaper was considered outdated and somewhat garish. Well, guess what — it’s back! Particularly bold prints. Adding bright, vivid wallpaper to create an accent wall can completely revitalize a room. Plus, with removable wallpaper options, you can change the look of a room each season — or whenever the mood strikes.

Enhanced home offices

Budget level: moderate

In 2023, many of our home offices are now our primary offices. A desk, a chair, and a little filing cabinet just doesn't cut it anymore. Turn that perfunctory space into a swanky lounge you won't mind spending eight hours in. Add a comfy love seat, dimmable lighting, a mini-fridge, a colorful area rug, a book case, some potted plants - whatever makes your office feel like home (which it should, since it's in your home).

Smart home technology

Budget level: moderate

We're living in the future. You can walk into your home and tell a robot that you want the temperature to be 72 degrees, and the robot will do it. This is the stuff we saw in sci-fi movies as kids and thought, "Wow, that'd be so cool!"

In 2023, technology that will keep your home secure, dim the lights, turn the TV on and off, play mood music, and even control the pressure in your shower head has become more affordable than ever before.

Multifunctional islands and rooms

Budget level: lavish

An island where you just cut up food, or just sit and eat, is so 2019. These days, multifunctionality is where it's at. An island that includes a sink, dishwasher, or trash pull-out is a great space-saver that still maintains its function as a spot to gather with family and friends.

Multifunctionality applies to rooms as well. Your mudroom can also be a laundry room. Your home theater can also be a game room.

Basement theaters

Budget level: lavish

Speaking of home theaters, what better place to put one than a finished basement? During the pandemic, a lot of homeowners who longed to go to the movies converted their basements or living rooms into home theaters.

If you’ve got the space, you can go multifunctional with your basement: a home theater, a full bar, an arcade and maybe a dance floor. The possibilities are only limited by your space and budget.

Spa bathrooms

Budget level: lavish

Our homes have become our offices, our movie theaters, our bar-restaurants. It was only a matter of time before they became our spas. At the end of a long work day, melt away the stress in your very own steam-filled paradise with natural stone tile, a walk-in shower, a free-standing oversized-tub to soak in, and even radiant-heated floors.

Tackle one or more of these for a trendier home — or blaze your own trail and be a trendsetter.
