More than eight percent of total home sales in New Jersey were real estate-owned property (REO) in December 2018—the highest percentage in the nation.1 REO properties are homes owned by a lender after an unsuccessful foreclosure auction. States with a large REO inventory may have an above-average foreclosure rate, which can depress prices. Connecticut and Alaska were the second- and third-highest, at 6.64% and 5.92% respectively.
Nationwide, Texas and Florida had the greatest number of housing units sold in December—each with over 40,000. Colder temperatures may have muted activity in the North and Midwest. For instance, 10,964 homes sold in Illinois versus 14,738 in October.
