2026 kitchen trends that boost home value and style
Whether you're shopping for a new home or planning some updates to your current home, the kitchen is always key. We consulted some experts, including the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA) 2026 Kitchen Trends Report,Footnote1 to see what's hot this year in kitchen design.
Here are a few popular ideas to inspire you:
Multi-functional, personalized spaces
Kitchens aren't just for cooking these days. Depending on your lifestyle, it may also be a dining area, an entertaining space or a homework spot for the kids. Current designers focus on creating personalized spaces that work for you. Options may include:
- Increased size, with eating areas that are customized for your needs.
- Dedicated coffee, wine or juice stations.
- Specialized storage such as cabinets for small appliances.
- Pet feeding stations, including storage for food.
- Integrated mudroom areas for homes that lack a separate entry space.
- Flexible office options for people who work from home.
Smart home tech
Convenient phone charging stations are a must, but there are so many more ways to integrate technology. Smart appliances can link to your phone or to a smart speaker with a voice assistant like Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant. This allows you to automate tasks such as preheating the oven or setting cooking times, saving time and energy. Smart appliances can also notify you through the app when service is needed, allowing you to catch problems before they get bigger and more expensive.
Transitional design
This combination of traditional and modern is currently the most popular style and gives you a wide range of options. Tip from a designer: When planning updates, don't overdo it. Choose a few elements that will stand out against a more neutral background.Footnote2 Options include:
- Warmer colors for cabinets, replacing cold white with beige, cream, taupe or white oak.
- Floor-to-ceiling cabinets paired with panel-ready appliances for a streamlined space.
- Darker colors on the island to contrast with lighter cabinets.
- Extending your wood floors into the kitchen (look for waterproof options).
- Quartz (manufactured stone) or quartzite (natural stone) counter tops for durability and easy maintenance.
How much does a kitchen renovation cost?
Costs vary depending on your location and the extent of changes. One common estimate is about $27,000 for a minor remodel, $79,000 for midrange and over $150,000 for something more upscale.Footnote3 That's why many homeowners use a home equity line of credit (HELOC) to fund their updates. A HELOC can be a flexible way to access cash as you need it during the course of the renovation.
Planning to sell your home? Plan ahead.
The good news is, a modest kitchen remodel can give you a great return on your investment. According to Zillow,Footnote4 a remodel costing $28,458 could add $32,141 to your home's resale value. Before you get started, keep these tips in mind:
- Work with your real estate professional to decide on a strategy to attract buyers.
- Avoid luxury upgrades that will make yours the most expensive home in the neighborhood.
- Choose more neutral finishes that will appeal to a wide range of buyers.
- Plan your financing so you're not cash poor when you close on your new home.
Updates for every budget
Whatever your situation — getting ready to sell, refreshing your current home, or looking to personalize a new home — there are many options that can fit almost every budget. Whether you're touching up paint colors or planning major construction, your dream kitchen can be within reach.
